What Happens at the ACRC?

During your Visit

When you arrive at the ACRC for your research study visit, you may be doing one or more of the following procedures:

Spirometry

Sputum Induction

Methacholine Challenge

Spirometry is a procedure to measure your lung function. You would be expected to blow in and out of a tube as hard and as fast as you can.

The sputum induction will help researchers by looking at a sample to look at different cells in your lungs. You will be breathing in a salty mist which would cause your lungs to create sputum. The sputum will be coughed up and collected by a research coordinator.

The methacholine challenge is a procedure the degree of asthma in an asthmatic. You will be inhaling increasingly small doses of methacholine mist.

 After your Visit

The data and samples collected from your participation is valuable to us and is important to understand the mechanisms of the different airway diseases we research. The following video describes some experiments performed with your samples.
